My Man Pendleton – Elizabeth Bevarly

Marry the boss’s daughter?

Pendleton can’t believe his ears. He took this new job hoping to make money, not marry into it. But if runaway heiress Kit McClellan doesn’t agree to enter into wedded bliss soon, the entire family fortune could be willed to the homeless pets of Louisville. Someone has to find Kit and bring her back as his fiancée–and his boss is telling Pendleton he’s just the man for the job.

Trouble is, Kit doesn’t give two hoots about her fortune–she’s looking for love…the sweep-you-off-your-feet kind of passion she’s never had before. When Pendleton comes striding into her life–sexy, attractive, and oh-so-handsome in his business suit–her heart tells her she’s finally found Mr. Right. But what if her heart is steering her wrong?

My Man Pendleton made me smile and then laugh.  And I kept on laughing all the way through the book. Pendleton’s responses and thoughts were spot on – the sort of replies that I wish I could think of in some situations.

At the start of the book, Kit was an insecure, spoilt and mischievous little rich girl. That was hardly surprising, given the fact that her mother had died, and that her father and brothers treated her like a prize possession. She didn’t believe that anybody could love her just for being herself, she assumed that every date was after her family’s money. By the end, with more than a little help from Pendleton, she had matured into a lovable woman.

My Man Pendleton was an enjoyable relaxing read which was hard to put down, mainly because I wanted to know what Kit was going to get up to next.

Not What She Seems – Victorine E. Lieske

Steven Ashton, a billionaire from New York, and Emily Grant, on the run from the law…and when they meet he can’t help falling for her. What he doesn’t know is that interfering in her life will put his own life in danger.

When billionaire Steven Ashton couldn’t stand his high society social life anymore, he left the stress of New York on a vacation for his soul. The need to meet real down to earth people led him to a small Nebraska town. He didn’t want to lie about who he was, but he couldn’t exactly tell them the truth.

Emily could have easily fallen in love with Steven, under different circumstances, but her past was catching up with her and she needed a new life. If the authorities found out about her, she could lose the one thing that meant everything, her four year old son.

Not What She Seems was not quite what I was expecting – it was better. Once I had started reading, I found it difficult to put down. I wanted to know why Emily was still with Richard, and whether she could lose him for long enough to build a relationship with Steven. Steven was a lovely character – although he had loads of money, he wasn’t stuck-up and he was fantastic with little Conner.

The mystery of who really killed Emily’s husband, William, kept me guessing right through the book. Although I thought I had it worked out after the first few chapters, I changed my mind several times, getting it totally wrong in the end!

The whole story was fast-paced, with lots of action. The romance was a bit laid back, it could have done with a few steamier moments, but on the whole, I enjoyed the book. Not What She Seems was advertised as sweet romantic suspense and that’s exactly what it is.

Hidden Steel – Doranna Durgin

Steve Spaneas doesn’t have a clue.

Who’d have thought that the woman who stumbles her way into his gym, looking and acting so very much like a street person off her meds, is really a CIA case officer whose memory has been obliterated by experimental drugs used by some very bad people?

And seriously, who’d have thought that her attempts to untangle the few clues she’s got would lead him right into her world of spies and counterspies, death and deception–and holy cow, stockpiled nuclear weapons?

But Steve had better figure out who he trusts–his years of experience on the streets, or the heart of a gritty woman determined to reclaim herself–and he’d better figure it out fast. Because suddenly there’s a body out behind the gym, surveillance teams lurking, and a series of unsavory goons following the trail of a woman temporarily named Mickey right through his life.

Hidden Steel was my first download for Kindle – in fact, I downloaded it before I bought my Kindle and started reading it on my phone. It was a free download, and it was what convinced me to buy a Kindle. I decided that if I could get free books as good as this, then I wanted more!

I thoroughly enjoyed Hidden Steel, from start to finish. I loved the way that Mickey was constantly remembering new things about herself, and the way she kept bursting into song and dance. The story moves along at a fast pace, and, although people are killed or wounded, there is not too much blood and gore. Both Steve and Mickey’s sense of humour in the face of adversity was brilliant and I really enjoyed the banter between them. The relationship between them builds slowly into romance, but never gets soppy.

I would recommend Hidden Steel to anybody who likes books with a mix of excitement and romance, without getting too heavy.

Build A Man – Talli Roland

Slave to the rich and the rude, cosmetic surgery receptionist Serenity Holland longs for the day she’s a high-flying tabloid reporter. When she meets Jeremy Ritchie — the hang-dog man determined to be Britain’s Most Eligible Bachelor by making himself over from head to toe and everything in between — Serenity knows she’s got a story no editor could resist.

With London’s biggest tabloid on board and her very own column tracking Jeremy’s progress from dud to dude, Serenity is determined to be a success. But when Jeremy’s surgery goes drastically wrong and she’s ordered to cover all the car-crash goriness, Serenity must decide how far she really will go for her dream job.

I really enjoyed Build A Man, and will never be able to look at paisley patterns in the same way again! Serenity is a Jaffa cake addict, determined to make a big break into journalism, but currently working as a receptionist at boyfriend, Peter’s, cosmetic surgery clinic. Peter shows more affection to his cat than to Serenity. Jeremy’s arrival at the clinic looks as though it will provide Serenity with the story she has been waiting for. Until things go wrong!

Serenity kept me laughing all the way through the book. I loved the way she talked about the Botox Bitches and the names she gave them. Peter took himself far too seriously and Jeremy was an all-round nice bloke. Serenity had a total lack of conscience – her aim was to be a journalist and NOTHING was going to stop her. Her quick thinking seemed to get her out of one hilarious problem… and drop her straight into the next one. Patient confidentiality and her growing friendship with Jeremy were all put on the line in order to provide stories to the tabloid newspaper.

This was a fun, amusing read and I am looking forward to the sequel – Construct A Couple due out in May.

Again – Diana Murdock

ONCE UPON A TIME…

LADY CATHERINE, a medieval noblewoman has it all: Beauty, wealth, and a handsome, valiant knight whose love for her knows no bounds. Though secretly holding out for a love that would consume her, she acquiesces her fate to wed this knight, a man she loves no more than she could a brother. But a chance meeting with a devastatingly handsome merchant shakes the very foundation of her world, compelling her to act and think in ways she never thought possible.

LOVE CAME BACK TO HAUNT HER…

ERYN REXFORD, a modern-day photographer, has everything many women dream of: Beauty, wealth, a sexy and successful husband, a career she loves, and a beautiful house nestled in a community of beach homes. But passionate love, the one thing she longs for, she learns to live without, until recurring dreams and visions spark memories of a life lived long ago and of a man whose love promises to follow her through time. Eryn recognizes a whisper of that promise in the eyes of a handsome stranger who stays close enough for her to notice, but not close enough for her to remember.

LOVE HAS NO BOUNDARIES…

Two women, born centuries apart, both accept lives of obligation and responsibility; lives without passion, with men who would claim them for their own. Until, that is, a chain of events complicates things in ways they never imagined, all because of one man’s love for a woman…a love that crosses through centuries to find her again.

“Again” is set both in the present and the past, alternating between Lady Catherine and the Middle Ages in one chapter, and Eryn in present day America in the next.

Catherine is expected to marry one of her father’s knights, Galen, who has been her companion for many years. However, she meets a sexy merchant, Jonathan, and falls in love.

Eryn is married to Bryce, but there is no passion in their relationship. Eryn has dreams about another man, who she’s sure she has previously met sometime in the past.

The two stories continue separately, but are connected by similar characters and situations in each. There is tragedy, jealousy and romance, before the two stories connect at the end.

I enjoyed the book and would recommend it, especially to anybody who has an interest or belief in reincarnation.

The One You Love – Paul Pilkington

Emma Holden’s nightmare has just begun. Her fiancé vanishes, leaving the battered and bloodied body of his brother in their London apartment. Someone is stalking her, watching her every move. And her family are hiding a horrifying secret; a secret that threatens all those she loves. In a desperate race against time, Emma must uncover the truth if she ever wants to see her fiancé alive again.

I really enjoyed “The One You Love”. The story draws you in right from the beginning, and keeps you enthralled with its many twists and turns. Emma’s insistence that her fiancé, Dan, would not have hurt his brother, Richard, was totally understandable and I liked the way she stood by her conviction throughout the book. But Dan is missing! The police seem pretty useless – they think Dan is guilty and are not really interested in investigating anyone else. It’s a good job that Emma is doing her own investigating. Family secrets are uncovered, stalkers dealt with and even press manipulation plays a part. There are many characters in the book and I mentally accused almost every one of them by the time I had read the whole book. The ending was not at all obvious, and kept me guessing right until the last words.

Enemies and Playmates – Darcia Helle

When the abused decide to fight back, the abuser’s world might just shatter.

Lauren Covington’s family maintains a grand facade that belies the life they live behind closed doors. Alex Covington, Lauren’s father, keeps a tight rein on his family through dominance, abuse, and obsessive control. Consequently, Lauren doesn’t believe she could ever trust a man, much less fall in love with one.

When Lauren meets Jesse Ryder, her carefully constructed protective wall shatters. She falls hopelessly and completely in love. It’s only fitting that Jesse is a private detective who had once worked for her father, had defied him, and was now the subject of Alex Covington’s wrath.

Amidst devastating loss, betrayal, and her father’s destructive pursuit of Jesse, Lauren finds the trust and love she had always longed for.

I wasn’t sure that I was going to like Enemies and Playmates when I first started reading it. However, it soon had me gripped – wondering what nasty, evil thing Alex was going to do next, and how Lauren and Jesse were going to react to it. Alex likes to think that he’s in control of everything, dominating his family with threats and abuse and paying people to carry out his wishes. Jesse has a strong determination to show the world what Alex is really like. I loved the way the relationship between Lauren and Jesse grew, especially as Lauren was wary of him to begin with. The storyline races along at a fast pace, thanks to the dialogue between the characters, making it difficult to put the book down. All in all, I really enjoyed this book, which I downloaded free ont0 my Kindle, and will definitely be reading Darcia Helle’s other books.
