Enemies and Playmates – Darcia Helle

When the abused decide to fight back, the abuser’s world might just shatter.

Lauren Covington’s family maintains a grand facade that belies the life they live behind closed doors. Alex Covington, Lauren’s father, keeps a tight rein on his family through dominance, abuse, and obsessive control. Consequently, Lauren doesn’t believe she could ever trust a man, much less fall in love with one.

When Lauren meets Jesse Ryder, her carefully constructed protective wall shatters. She falls hopelessly and completely in love. It’s only fitting that Jesse is a private detective who had once worked for her father, had defied him, and was now the subject of Alex Covington’s wrath.

Amidst devastating loss, betrayal, and her father’s destructive pursuit of Jesse, Lauren finds the trust and love she had always longed for.

I wasn’t sure that I was going to like Enemies and Playmates when I first started reading it. However, it soon had me gripped – wondering what nasty, evil thing Alex was going to do next, and how Lauren and Jesse were going to react to it. Alex likes to think that he’s in control of everything, dominating his family with threats and abuse and paying people to carry out his wishes. Jesse has a strong determination to show the world what Alex is really like. I loved the way the relationship between Lauren and Jesse grew, especially as Lauren was wary of him to begin with. The storyline races along at a fast pace, thanks to the dialogue between the characters, making it difficult to put the book down. All in all, I really enjoyed this book, which I downloaded free ont0 my Kindle, and will definitely be reading Darcia Helle’s other books.
